Safer Internet Day was celebrated by schools up and down the UK yesterday, the day has a big impact on the children and the ways they use the internet. This year’s motto was ” Create, Connect and Share Respect A better internet starts with you ” A report was commissioned to learn about the internet habits of the children that live in the UK.
We have included some of the data in this post, the rest can be found at the report link below
Did you know that the terms of service of all social media platforms require their users to be aged 13 and over. Although this report is based on 8-17 year olds, we are aware that many people use it underage.
Children often become reliant on social media for their happiness, this can sometimes be referred to as the like effect where children feel their only value is likes. The graphic below shows that children often only believe that they are worth something if they receive around 50 likes a post and have over 200 followers. It is important to educate children to make sure they know that their self worth is not based on how many likes they get.
The children that were surveyed indicated it is important that their parents and carers will be there to help them if something worries them online. If you would like more information on E-safety, or would like some guidance on setting up Parental controls etc. You can speak to Mr Hunt at the school office (available Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays)
